Lady Spikers beat NU. Nears twice-to-beat edge

La Salle pounced on National University’s lackadaisical performance to hammer out a 25-12, 25-14, 25-17 win and move closer in clinching the semifinals bonus in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament Saturday at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

The vaunted great wall of the Lady Spikers – Michelle Gumabao, Abigail Maraño and Jacq Alarca – scored 10 hits apiece, while libero Melissa Gohing had 14 digs to help the Taft-based squad improve to 10-1 card.

“Kailangan pa ng konting pukpok pa sa training. Hopefully, magiging maayos ang kondisyon ng mga bata sa huling tatlong laro namin sa eliminations,” said La Salle mentor Ramil de Jesus.

The Lady Spikers are a victory shy in bagging the first ‘twice-to-beat’ slot in the ‘Final Four’. After a week-long break, La Salle will next face Ateneo on Feb. 6, which is the start of its brutal three-game stretch to end the eliminations.

“Malakas ang floor defense nila (Lady Eagles) at magaling ang kanilang setter (Jem Ferrer). We have to be very prepared at maging focus ang paglalaro ng mga bata,” said de Jesus.

The Lady Bulldogs fell to 4-7 and in danger of missing the semis bus. NU is now trailing two and a half games behind Ateneo and Adamson (6-4) in the hunt for the last ‘Final Four’ berth. Mervic Mangui and Lucille Bayron finished with nine hits apiece for the Lady Bulldogs.

La Salle needs two wins in the last three games to finish No. 1 after the elims.

Lady Spikers enter Final4. Green Spikers beat Eagles

Sophomore Michelle Gumabao continued her breakout performance as La Salle booked the first ‘Final Four’ berth with a 25-19, 25-11, 25-23 win against Far Eastern University Wednesday in UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

A product of Holy Spirit-Quezon City, Gumabao finished with 11 points, including four blocks, to lift the Lady Spikers notch their ninth win in 10 matches.

“Happy ako sa inilalaro ni Michelle (Gumabao), mataas ang kumpiyansa ng bata. Mataas ang kanyang percentage sa attacks, blocks at service. Masipag hindi lamang sa laro pati sa ensayo,” said La Salle mentor Ramil de Jesus.

The Lady Tamaraws last tasted the lead in the third frame, 23-22, from a Kathlene Magsumbol block when veteran Jacq Alarca scored a drop shot to level things up at 23-23. FEU never had a chance to extend the game when Gumabao scored two straight kills for La Salle to seal the straight sets win.

Alarca topscored with 13 points while Stephanie Mercado and Abigail Maraño added eight hits apiece for the Lady Spikers, who made it to the semifinals for the third straight season.

Rookie Rosemarie Vargas fired 13 hits, including three service aces, while Maica Morada chipped in 12 points for the Lady Tamaraws, who prior to the match have won three straight games. FEU slipped to 3-7 mark which derailed their ‘Final Four’ bids.

Staring on a 12-14 deficit, Gumabao and Alarca took charge in La Salle’s 13-5 run to clinch the first set. “I hope na ma-maintain ang kondisyon ng mga bata sa last four games ng eliminations. Mahirap yung nasa peak ka tapos babagsak bigla ang laro mo pagdating sa semis,” said de Jesus, who is seeking to guide the Lady Archers to a sixth UAAP title.

In the men’s division, Mark Lee had 21 hits while Chris Macasaet added 17 points to lead La Salle to a 25-23, 22-25, 25-15, 25-21 triumph of Ateneo and remain in third spot at 7-3.

Lady Spikers “get back” at UE

The Lady Spikers yesterday sent a strong message to the team that inflicted their “only defeat” so far in the season – they can’t beat us on the court.

Led by Charleen Cruz and Abigail Marano, La Salle crushed UE 25-18, 25-16, 25-19 for their eighth win of the season. You can call it payback as the Lady Warriors won their first round match by forfeiture. Cruz and Marano scored 12 points each.

Earlier in the day, the Green Spikers scored a similar straight set conquest over the Red Warriors 25-15, 25-14, 25-21. Chris Macasaet and Emilio Lee scored 15 and 12 points respectively for La Salle as they maintain their hold on 3rd place in men’s volleyball. Read more…

Lady Spikers forfeit only ONE game. Still on top!

Posted by GreenArrows of Archerpride.com

THIS JUST IN!!! The DLSU Womens Volleyball team has been assessed a one game forfeiture (their victory over UE) as a penalty for the participation of two of our players in the Viking Tournament. This means that instead of 8-0, DLSU’s record is now 7-1 or STILL NUMBER ONE!!!

It’s fortunate that the UAAP board decided on the issue very quickly. A 1-game penalty means that the Lady Spikers are still on top of the standings. This allows the team to focus on the challenges of retaking the championship. It must be noted that after our team swept UST at the end of the first round, last year’s champions again went down to a second straight set loss to Ateneo, which seems to be picking up on their game. It will be an interesting run up to the playoffs.

Lady Spikers Face Possible Sanctions

Reports surfaced late last week about the possibility that the undefeated Lady Spikers could forfeit some games due a violation of the UAAP rules banning participation of any players in outside tournaments while the UAAP tournament is ongoing. According to news reports, two Lady Spikers played in a tournament during the Christmas break, and this was reported in a tabloid.

Once La Salle was made aware of the situation, the school wrote the UAAP to inform them of the situation. The players in question were identified as Carmela Garbin and Clarisse Yeung, and the school barred them from further participation in the ongoing tournament until their status was clarified by the board. A UAAP board meeting is scheduled for next week, and it is expected that this matter will be one of the items  on the agenda.

If the players are declared ineligible due to the violation, the Lady Spikers could potentially forfeit all the games in which Garbin and Yeung played in – a total of 4. This is the worst case scenario, and if it occurs, instead of an immaculate 7-0 win-loss record, the Lady Spikers’ record will drop to 3-4, placing them in 4th or 5th depending on which schools benefit from the reversal of the results of their game with our team.

By volunteering the information to the UAAP and submitting itself to the decision of the UAAP, La Salle has shown once again that the school is committed to the tenets of fair play and integrity.

After today’s (Jan. 16) game against ADU which they swept in straight sets, the Lady Spikers tote a 8-0 W-L record. If the forfeiture is carried out, that record will drop to 4-4. However, with the way the Lady Spikers are playing, the team should make the playoffs.

The team has only given up 2 sets in 9 games, and looks like they are determined to retake the crown this year, even if the route to the championship could take a few detours.

Lady Spikers beat Adamson to remain “Undefeated”

La Salle is 8-0, for now, in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament.

But the hard part begins for the Lady Spikers, who are waiting for the UAAP board decision this week regarding the consequences against their two reserve players who violated the league rules for allegedly playing in an invitational tournament.

Despite all the distractions, La Salle still played with a lot of heart to hammer out a 25-11, 25-23, 25-14 win over Adamson Sunday and stay unscathed.

Vastly-improved Michelle Gumabao continued her impressive showing with 14 hits, including three blocks, while Jacq Alarca had 12 points, highlighted by three service aces and two blocks for the league-leading Lady Archers, who were given a lot of love by their supporters who trooped the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

The league board will discuss on Wednesday on possible sanctions against La Salle regarding on the unauthorized participation of reserves Carmela Garbin and Clarisse Yeung in the Vikings Cup in World Citi Colleges. Read more…

Revenge is “Sweep” for the Lady Spikers

This article is guest posted by PinoySpikers.com

La Salle rode on its strong start to subdue defending champion University of Santo Tomas, 25-20, 25-19, 25-12, and complete a first round sweep Wednesday in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

The Lady Spikers put to a halt to the Tigresses’ amazing 18-game winning streak which dates back from last season.

“Pinaghandaan talaga namin ng mabuti ang game and pinag-aralan namin ang mga strikes ng UST pero hindi ko inasahan na matatapos ng ganito kabilis,” said La Salle mentor Ramil de Jesus.

In what expected to be an epic battle between the two collegiate powerhouses has ended up in a one-sided affair in the match lasted for one hour and 13 minutes.

“Sa height halos equal lang pero ang advantage namin ay mas nag-concentrate kami sa floor defense,” said de Jesus.

The win by the Lady Spikers, who also started 7-0 last year, served as a sweet revenge to their painful setback to the Tigresses in the Season 72 best-of-three finals. Read more…
