Volleybelles dump UE. Ready for showdown with UST

This article is guest posted by PinoySpikers.com

With former Asian sprint queen Lydia de Vega watching in the stands, an inspired Stephanie Mercado gave all her best to help La Salle remain unbeaten.

The Lady Spikers steamrolled to a 25-17, 25-17, 25-21 victory over University of the East and extend their winning run to six games at the resumption of the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament Saturday at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

Despite missing her team’s Christmas break training to be with her family following the death of her grandfather Francisco ‘Tatang’ de Vega, Mercado was still at her usual form, finishing with six points before sitting out the third set.

“Sobrang inspired na maglaro dahil nanonood ang mommy ko ng live sa venue. Lagi siyang nanonood ng mga games ko sa live streaming and I’m very happy,” said Mercado, who is in her final season for La Salle. Read more…

Up Close with the Lady Spikers – Part 1

Interview by Tin Pe Benito

Mikaela Esperanza

How does it feel to be part of this team?
A mixed feeling! It is a great feeling but at the same time a challenging one. Being part of the country’s best of the best volleyball team is such an honor but of course there is great responsibility that comes with it.

What can you bring to the team in your first year?
As a setter,  I hope to provide my teammates good opportunities for them to score. I always think of others first before myself.

How was your first experience playing for La Salle during the off-season?
Ever since I started playing, I was already donning the green and white uniform.hahaha. But seriously, wearing DLSU’s uniform was really something special for me. I am really proud wearing it not only because my surname is at the back but also because I am playing for the name in front of my jersey which is LA SALLE.

What are your expectations this season?
No expectations really. Our coach always reminds us that this is our season so we have to do our best in every game and play like there is no tomorrow.

Any message to the team’s followers?
Thank you so much for the undying support you all give to the team. You guys are the reason why we are inspired to play. Animo La Salle! Read more…

Lady Spikers maintain unblemished record and other UAAP news

LA SALLE dropped a set for the first time this season but regrouped just in time to subdue Ateneo, 25-17, 25-16, 23-25, 25-13, and grab a piece of the lead Sunday in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

After losing the third frame, the Lady Spikers used their efficient service in the fourth set, where the Taft-based spikers unloaded seven aces. Holding on valiantly with their solid floor defense in the first three sets, the Lady Eagles folded up in the fourth frame with their poor receiving.

“Sobrang taas ng spirit ng Ateneo, maganda talaga ang depensa nila. Mabuti na lang at naka-recover ang mga bata sa fourth set, napatunayan sa game na ito na walang madaling kalaban sa tournament,” said La Salle mentor Ramil de Jesus.

Stephanie Mercado had 18 points while team captain Cha Cruz had 17 hits for the Lady Spikers. La Salle improved to 4-0 card to tie defending champion University of Santo Tomas on top.

The Lady Spikers  scored 18 blocks, with four coming from Jacq Alarca and Michelle Gumabao. Dzi Gervacio and Fille Cainglet combined for 35 points for Ateneo, which struggled with poor performances from Kara Acevedo and rookie Ella de Jesus. (TJ)

NOTES: Lady Eagles coach Roger Gorayeb is 0-5 against the Lady Archers since taking over in the 2008-09 season..Ateneo went 5-2 in the first round last year…La Salle last lost to Ateneo in the first round of the 2007-08 season, with ace scorer Charo Soriano playing her final season.

Another straight set win for the Lady Spikers

This article is guest posted by PinoySpikers.com

La Salle needed only one hour to remain unscathed in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament.

The Lady Spikers booked their third consecutive straight sets win with a 25-11, 25-14, 25-9 drubbing of National University Saturday at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan. Just like in the victories against Adamson and University of the Philippines, La Salle simply used its vaunted blocking to remain on top of the standings.

“Nasa kondisyon ang mga bata. Hindi pa talaga nate-test ang mga bata, yung mga laro ba na close or come-from-behind ang result,” said Lady Spikers mentor Ramil de Jesus.

A date with Ateneo, the Season 72 third placer, on Dec. 12 is expected to be La Salle’s first ‘acid test’ in the tournament. “Isa talaga sila (Lady Eagles) sa inaabangan namin. Kumpletong team ang Ateneo, karamihan sa kanila ay third year players at maganda rin sila dumepensa,” said De Jesus, who won five titles for the Lady Spikers. Read more…

La Salle Spikers start UAAP season on a high

This article is guest posted by PinoySpikers.com

La Salle is already making an early statement to regain the crown in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament.

The Japan-trained Lady Spikers plummeled a hapless Adamson side, 25-14, 25-13, 25-15, for their first victory Sunday at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

Using its vaunted blocking to the hilt, La Salle simply dominated the match right from the get go, with the ‘Big 3’ Jacq Alarca, Cha Cruz at Stephanie Mercado combining for 36 hits.

Sophomore Abigail Maraño was also a big factor for the Lady Spikers, contributing 12 hits, including two blocks.

In the match lasted only for one hour and six minutes, La Salle blocked six attempts, including two from Michelle Gumabao.

“Advantage talaga namin ang height and naging effective ang aming blocking,” said La Salle mentor Ramil de Jesus. Read more…

DLSU Volleyball- On the rebound in UAAP Season 73

Going in to their last game of the eliminations a season ago, it almost looked certain that the Lady Spikers would run away with the win and get the sweep.  After all, they were simply a class above the rest of the field. Unfortunately, the team lost the match and it was all downhill from thereon. In what many expected to be a perfect season for the Lady Spikers turned out to be a disaster as they were eventually swept by UST in the finals.

With its core nearly intact, the Lady Spikers are all poised to regain the crown that slipped away from them last year. The team is again among the favorites in this tournament and the challenge is for them to stay focused and motivated from start to finish.

The Green Spikers are also looking forward to improve on their 5th place finish last year. The team’s main stalwarts are back with the hopes of getting a crack at the final four this season.

It’s time to spike that ball once again! UAAP Season 73 volleyball starts today.

April Fool’s Day Retraction

Those who checked greenarchers.ph last April 1 were greeted with a story regarding the DLSU Lady Spikers last-minute decision to join the V-league. It also mentioned that the team will parade a Japanese import.

That article, posted at exactly 12AM of that day was an April Fool’s day joke. Hence, we would like to issue an official retraction to that story as this news was taken literally by many. We did not expect that this article, even with its rather far-fetched content would gain this much attention.

For the record, the Lady Spikers will not be participating in the V-league, nor will there be any Japanese volleyball star coming to town.

Like all other stories of a similar nature that came out on April 1, this article was published in the lighthearted spirit of the occasion, and was not expected to be taken at face value.

Lady Spikers’ got their post-game faces on

lady_spikers_thanksgiving

This pic says it all! The Lady Spikers have already put this recently concluded season behind them and will look forward to a more fruitful campaign next year.  This was taken during their thanksgiving dinner hours after last Saturday’s game.

The team will remain intact for next season as most of the seniors still have one year of eligibility left. This of course is assuming that they decide to return for another tour of duty. The future looks bright for our Lady Spikers and even though they were not able to defend the crown this year, they still gave us one helluva performance. And for that we thank you Ladies.
