That 90s Show: Don Allado leads the way as La Salle routs Ateneo in PBA exhibition game

null

Just as advertised, this game was certainly like a dream.

For this one night, La Sallians were taken back in time when the Green Archers were the kings of college basketball.

Don Allado scored 23 points and pulled down 7 rebounds as he led the PBA Green Archer Alumni team dismantle their Atenean counterparts 117-104 today in a charity exhibition match.

La Salle played with a lot of intensity right from the start as they stormed to a 34-20 lead at the end of the first quarter. The team remained hot offensively throughout the match while their opponents continued to look disoriented and out of sync.

Mac Mac Cardona and JV Casio added 20 and 13 points respectively for La Salle. Ateneo was led by LA Tenorio with 20 points followed by Enrico Villanueva with 19.

Allado, the oldest player in this game, was adjudged MVP. He was a member of the 1998-1999 UAAP championship teams and was  MVP in both those years. Since then, no Green Archer has been able to win the league’s highest individual award.

Box scores:

DLSU 117 – Allado 23, Cardona 20, Casio 13, Sharma 12, Arana 9, Maierhofer 9, Yeo 9, Ritualo 8, Cortez 8, Aquino 3, Gaco 3.

PBA players from La Salle and Ateneo renew rivalry

For the third time, the PBA will stage another exhibition match between active pros from La Salle and Ateneo. The “Green-Blooded vs True Blue” Dream Game will be this coming Sunday, February 5 at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

In 2005, Ateneo defeated La Salle 88-85 in a hotly-contested match. In 2008, the game ended in a deadlock, 90-all as no overtime was played.

Here is a quick breakdown of the two teams.

Green-Blooded True Blue
Ren Ren Ritualo Larry Fonacier
JV Casio Rabeh Al-Hussaini
Mike Cortez Japeth Aguilar
Mac Cardona Nonoy Baclao
Joseph Yeo JC Intal
TY Tang Enrico Villanueva
Rico Maierhofer Paolo Bugia
Ryan Arana LA Tenorio
Carlo Sharma Doug Kramer
Willy Wilson Eric Salamat
Don Allado Wesley Gonzales
Jerwin Gaco Rich Alvarez
Brian Ilad Magnum Membrere

Backcourt Match-up
More than half of the players in the DLSU roster are guards. Expect the team to play an open-court, up-tempo style with a lot of scoring on the break and from the perimeter. With speed and athleticism on their side, DLSU will most likely turn this into a running game. ADMU has only one true point-guard in their line-up. Advantage: DLSU

Frontline Match-up
Allado is the only real post-up threat, Carlo Sharma is the only legit center and Rico Maierhofer is not expected to play heavy minutes since he just recovered from a serious knee injury. Wilson, Gaco and Ilad will be there for their defense and hustle points. Expect Ateneo to take it strong inside. Advantage: ADMU

Experience Match-up
Most of the DLSU players are very much part of their PBA team’s regular rotation. Casio may be technically a rookie but you may consider him a veteran already if you count his two-year duty with the national team. On the other side, Fonacier and Tenorio have proven to be big-time clutch players in the pros. Advantage: DLSU

This is not your typical exhibition match. This is all about school pride once again, a battle for bragging rights.

After nearly 5 years of waiting, former Green Archer Jerwin Gaco will finally make his professional debut in the upcoming PBA Fiesta conference. The 29 year-old forward will be among the four new faces that will suit up for the Barako Energy Coffee team.

Jerwin, as a graduate school student played for the Green Archers from 2003 to 2004. He was part of that bumper rookie class that included JV Casio and Ryan Araña.

Jerwin was indeed the most hardworking Archer during those years and he successfully filled in the void left by the departure of several veterans the season before. As a rookie, he immediately established himself as one of the prime catalysts of the team along with veterans Manny Ramos, Joseph Yeo and Mac Mac Cardona. Despite being a rookie-laden team in 2003, the Green Archers remained a contender and was just a win short of reaching the finals.

It was just unfortunate that he was snubbed during the 2005 PBA draft. He then played in the PBL and was part of those multi-titled Harbour Centre teams.

Don en Rico’s Tender Juicy Championship

Don Allado and Rico Maierhofer, former Green Archer stars of different eras teamed up to help Purefoods win its nth PBA All-Filipino championship today via a sweep over the hardluck Alaska team. The two guys are born winners, having won multiple titles in the UAAP and the PBL.

Don, a two-time UAAP MVP and champion, was acquired by Purefoods last year and provided solid support to the more established big men in the team. Now on his 10th season as a pro, it seems that he has found a home at Purefoods.

For Rico, his pro career is just about to take-off. The second overall pick in this season’s draft, he is truly a prized catch. His overall intensity and play fits the team’s run-and-gun offense. He is currently one of the leaders for the top rookie award.

Such faith the coaching staff of Purefoods has with these two that they decided to let go of several key players during the off-season. It pays to have players who know what it takes to be a champion. Talk about instant results.

Rico Maierhofer leads PBA rookie pack

Former Green Archer standout Rico Maierhofer is the current frontrunner for the coveted top freshman award. The high-flying beanpole played 4 years for the green and white squad and graduated from his college degree last June. Chosen 2nd overall by Purefoods in the PBA draft, Rico leads all neophytes in the statistical race with averages of 8.0 points, 5.8 rebounds and 1.1 blocks.

Just like many former Green Archers before him, Rico is making instant waves in just his first season in the professional level.

Even the 1st overall pick, who decided to remain an amateur, could only watch Rico soar above the PBA stratosphere.

Former Archers set target on first PBA title

We take a break from our regular programming to feature two former Green Achers who are currently playing in the ongoing championship series in the PBA. For Ren Ren Ritualo and Mac Mac Cardona, they sure don’t want this opportunity slip away. Being the fierce competitors that they are since their collegiate days, these Archers are on target for a shot at their very first championship crown in their professional careers.

Having played a combined 11 years in the PBA, Ren Ren and Mac Mac have still yet to win a title despite them being able to muster individual success with Ritualo winning Rookie of the Year in 2002 and Cardona bagging the best player of the conference award a couple of years back. Their scoring abilities are without doubt remarkable but numerous setbacks for their Talk N Text team in previous campaigns have foiled their championship aspirations. This time around, they finally get a shot at the crown as they play Alaska in a best-of-seven showdown.

For Ren Ren, this is a chance for him to regain his championship glory, perhaps last experienced during his time in the amateurs as a member of numerous winning teams. For Mac Mac, this serves as another opportunity for him to silence his detractors who pestered him to no end during the semifinals and prove that he belongs to the PBA elite. We wish the best of luck to the both of them.

Their jerseys may be blue this time but they will forever be green.
