Benilde Blazers eye better season

As posted in the Manila Standard Today
by Peter Atencio

THE rookie-laden College of St. Benilde Blazers are looking forward to a better season in the 87th National Collegiate Athletic Association men’s basketball tournament.

Blazers coach Richard del Rosario said this after he tinkered with the present roster of the team during the summer.

With six mainstays leading the way and nine rookies eager to prove themselves, the Blazers are a mixture of talents that could help improve the team’s seventh-place finish last season.

Del Rosario believes that improvements in terms of team chemistry throughout the season, will bring the squad to new heights.

Carlo Lastimosa, who averages 17.25 points per game, will carry much of the scoring load for the Blazers.

“Hopefully, it will be better for us this season,” said Del Rosario, who is now on his third season. Read more…

Blazers’ Carlo Lastimosa wins NCAA Season 86 ROY

College of Saint Benilde may have endured yet another forgetful campaign in the NCAA but one of its top players came away with one of the top individual honors.

Guard Carlo Lastimosa was officially announced the Rookie of the Year of the league’s 86th season after a stellar year where he helped the Blazers post five victories in 16 games.

The former standout from Ateneo de Cagayan who also had a short stint as a member of the Ateneo Team B registered 32.9 statistical points to beat out Arellano’s Jerald Lapuz by a wide margin to win the honor given to best player on his maiden campaign.

Standing at 5-foot-11, Lastimosa led the league in scoring with an average of 17.3 points on 39-percent shooting while adding 3.6 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.4 steals in playing all 16 games this season.

His best game came in a 62-51 loss to defending champion San Sebastian with 26 points on August 27.

Lastimosa, the nephew of cage legend Jojo Lastimosa, became the first Blazer in 10 years to win the Rookie of the Year.

The last CSB player to win the honor was Al Magpayo during the 2000 season, the same year the Blazers captured their first and still only NCAA title via a two-game sweep of San Sebastian in the finals.

Blazers close out season; Greenies boost final 4 bid

College of Saint Benilde closed out its campaign on a sour note as it faltered down the stretch succumbing to a 64-59 setback at the hands of Mapua on Wednesday in the 86th NCAA basketball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.

The Blazers rallied from a nine-point deficit in the third quarter but allowed the Cardinals’ Rodel Ranises to uncork four triples, including three straight, in the payoff period to end the season with a record of five wins and 11 losses.

It also allowed Mapua to enter the Final Four after bagging its ninth win against six defeats and thus eliminate Letran, which totes a 6-8 slate, from contention.

Carlo Lastimosa finished with 16 points, five rebounds and two assists in 34 minutes but endured another shooting slump making just 4-of-16 from the field.

Also contributing was center Tim McCoy with 15 points, 11 rebounds and five blocks, Jan Tan with 10 points and seven rebounds and Luis Sinco with nine markers. Read more…

Blazers’ Final 4 hopes fading. Patriots shine in UCAA volleyball

College of Saint Benilde is closing in on missing the Final Four for the eighth consecutive season.

After a solid start, the Blazers ran out of juice in bowing to Jose Rizal University, 73-55, in the 86th NCAA basketball tournament last Friday at The Arena in San Juan. Carlo Lastimosa helped the team coached by Richard del Rosario to score the game’s first six points and grab an 11-6 lead in the opening period.

But lead soon disappeared as the Heavy Bombers slowly came back to grab several slim leads in the second period. The game was even at 24-all when the Kalentong-based cagers began to unravel as Raycon Kabigting led a 13-0 run by firing two triples – one the go-ahead shot and the other came with nine seconds left that enabled them to grab a 37-24 lead at the half.

St Benilde’s woes continued in the second half as it was the turn of JRU’s Nate Matute to engulf from downtown by gaining a 23-point advantage in the second half.

The loss snapped the Blazers’ two-game winning streak and fell to a record of four wins and nine defeats, putting them on the brink of missing the semis anew. That will occur if Mapua, sporting a 7-5 win-loss slate, beats winless Perpetual Help on Monday. Read more…

College of Saint Benilde won back-to-back games for the first time in the 86th NCAA basketball tournament but it almost failed to do such feat against Arellano University on Friday.

The Blazers nearly paid for a crucial mistake when the Chiefs bungled two clutch freethrows in the dying seconds to escape with a 71-69 victory at The Arena in San Juan. Holding a precarious 70-69 lead, CSB’s Ian de la Paz gave up a foul on a driving Jerald Lapuz with 5.3 seconds remaining. But to the delight of a very sparse Benildean crowd, the burly Lapuz muffed both foul shots and Mark de Guzman grabbed the rebound and was fouled with 2.2 ticks left.

De Guzman, who finished with 19 points, made just one of two charities to make it a two-point lead and Arellano’s Vergel Zulueta nearly gave St Benilde a shocking loss as his miracle shot from near midcourt hit the left side of the rim at the buzzer. The win enabled the squad of coach Richard del Rosario to hike their record to four wins and eight losses for solo seventh spot. Read more…

Can College of Saint Benilde end continue its “unbeaten record”?

It’s doable. But then it can be done if the Blazers can hurdle defending champion San Sebastian as they continue their campaign in the 86th NCAA basketball tournament Wednesday at The Arena in San Juan.

Coming off a nine-day respite, St Benilde gets its first acid test of the season against the Stags, who are tied with San Beda for the lead with identical 3-0 slates.

The Blazers opened the season on a bright note when they beat Arellano, 70-64, last July 5.

In that contest, the backcourt duo of Mark de Guzman and Carlo Lastimosa and center Jan Tan provided the spark in beating the Chiefs.

That win enabled CSB to keep its unbeaten record, as jokingly said by coach Richard del Rosario. Read more…

St. Benilde aims for a better showing in upcoming V-League

College of Saint Benilde seeks to perform better this time around as the Second Conference of the 7th Shakey’s V-League unfolds this Sunday at The Arena in San Juan.

Coming off a quarterfinals finish the previous campaign, the Lady Blazers return with an intact lineup although the official roster released recently by the league did not list lefty LC Quemada and Zhar Velez.

The team of coach Thelma Barina-Rojas will be led by veterans Giza Yumang and Ren Agero along with Rossan Fajardo and Wena Miran.

Returning as guest player is Jennifer Manzano, who made her debut last conference. She is from sister school La Salle-Dasmarinas where she was helped the Lady Patriots win a number of NCRAA titles as well as several beach volleyball championships.

St Benilde makes its debut on Sunday against newcomer National University in the first game at 2 p.m. The Lady Bulldogs will be led by Mervic Mangui, the third leading scorer in last year’s UAAP wars, and new acquisition Dindin Santiago who transferred from league powerhouse University of Santo Tomas. New-look Blazers start NCAA campaign with a win

It’s another rebuilding year for College of Saint Benilde but it still somehow sent a strong message that it is not keen on being called as one of the pushover teams of the 86th NCAA basketball tournament.

The Blazers, despite their lack of ceiling, went to their outside shooting, transition play and energetic efforts to beat Final Four-favorite Arellano, 70-64, to jumpstart their campaign last July 5 at The Arena in San Juan.

St Benilde led for most of the way relying on the offensive sparks of Mark de Guzman, Carlo Lastimosa and Jan Tan but its defense came through in the final four minutes to secure the victory in front a large portion of students supporting on the upper level of the playing venue.

De Guzman, a former member of the RP U-18 team in 2008, topscored with 14 points, five rebounds and nine assists while Lastimosa, a nephew of basketball legend Jojo Lastimosa, hit all of his 13 points in the second half.

The lanky Tan, meanwhile, notched a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds despite playing against a more heftier and athletic Arellano frontline.

CSB, despite seven consecutive losing seasons since 2003, won its fourth consecutive opening day game dating back to the 2007 season.

“The guys showed a lot of energy and I feel this is a more-talented team compared to my team last season although this is a young team so they have the tendency to make some mental mistakes so I’m hoping they would mature as the season goes on,” said coach Richard del Rosario.
