Part 9: The 2K Decade Recap – 2008

2008

With the departure of TY Tang and Cholo Villanueva, two of their vital cogs in their championship run in the previous season, the Green Archers were hard-pressed to retain the championship in the 2008 campaign. The team lost big man Brian Ilad to graduation, Kish Co who played heroically during the championship against UE, and OJ Cua. Their departure was somewhat softened by the return from injury of Marko Barticevic. Left to carry the cudgels for the team were veterans JV Casio and Rico Maierhofer. The two practically carried the team on their shoulders for the entire season. The team lineup included rookies Maui Villanueva, LA Revilla, Joshua Webb, Hyram Bagatsing, Jovet Mendoza, and Manoj Chandumal.

La Salle started the season on a bad note, losing their initial match against Ateneo. They won all other games in the first round except for their last assignment against UE, which went all out for revenge after being swept in the titular playoff in the previous season.

Injuries took their toll on the Archers. Marko reinjured his knee after performing well, and Simon sat out a few games due to a head injury. LA Revilla, an exciting if undersized point guard, stepped into the vacancy, and showed why he was the choice of the coaches during their recruitment.

In the second round, the Archers managed the same win-loss performance as in the first round, but this time they fell to the hands of resurgent FEU, behind the scoring of  eventual Smart Gilas national team mainstay Barroca.  Again the Archers failed to solve the Ateneo inside-out game, losing anew in another tight game.

The Green Archers basically struggled all throughout the eliminations, with a lack of depth in the frontline as well as difficulties in consistent scoring. They finished at 10-4 in a tie with FEU for 2nd. Tough, hard-fought games characterized the Archers’ elimination rounds. Gone was the one-sided dominance over most of the league, and only the sheer determination and will power of the team led by captain JV and Rico prevented losses to UST, UE, and the “weaker” teams. The once dreaded pressure defense still netted the Archers some points, but the other teams had already devised their countermeasures. At this point, it was apparent that the team was at a disadvantage in the paint against the playoff-bound teams despite the presence of Rico.

Ateneo was clearly on a different plane that year, having lost only 1 game in the eliminations. Along with the steady leadership of Chris Tiu, the Eagles saw the emergence of their center Rabah Al-Husseini into a legitimate threat in the shaded lane. Rabah’s amazing season was capped off by him winning the MVP plum, and Ateneo dominated the individual awards with Buenafe copping the Rookie of the Year award.

The Green Archers dueled with the Tamaraws in a virtual best-of-three showdown for a finals berth. La Salle eventually prevailed in two gut-wrenching games to arrange another title clash with Ateneo, which easily defeated UE in their own series. The FEU series could have easily gone either way, and was decided only in the last minute of the second game.

Not having beaten the Blue Eagles all season, the Archers were definitely in a quandary in the finals. Ateneo had the clear manpower advantage, particularly in the forward and center slots where they had a significant edge in size and heft. The Ateneo strategy was to limit the contributions of JV and Rico at all cost, and they succeeded when the other Archers were unable to pick up the scoring slack.

Breaks didn’t seem to go La Salle’s way in the finals as they were swept by the Blue Eagles in two tight games that were decided only in the final few minutes. Despite all the disadvantages, the Green Archers went down fighting. Whenever the Archers would double team the bigger Ateneo inside players, the outside shooting of Tiu and Reyes kept the Eagles in the lead. At the end, the Blue Eagles’ depth was simply too much for the team to overcome. Still, second place was an achievement considering that this was a young team with 6 rookies.

Video: UAAP Season 71 Women’s Volleyball Finals Game3 – Final moments of Set 4

This was actually my first time to watch a live volleyball game and I was really amazed as to how exciting this sport can be. Action was fast-paced all throughout the contest. I was able to get a good view of the game at courtside and recorded the final moments of the last set.

So here it is starting from the 19-16 mark of Set 4 up to the singing of the alma mater song. Enjoy the clip!

Lady Spikers Win UAAP Season 71 Volleyball Crown

from gmanews.tv

La Salle outclassed Far Eastern University with a 25-19, 20-25, 25-21, 25-21, win Sunday at the packed The Arena in San Juan, snaring the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) women’s volleyball crown for the first time in three years.

The Lady Archers leaned on team captain Manilla Santos in capturing the team’s fifth title in the league and a first since the 2005-2006 season.

“Maganda ang galaw ng mga players. Relax lang sila kasi kailangan nilang mailabas ang tunay nilang laro,” said De La Salle coach Ramil de Jesus.

Santos, who played her final game as a collegiate player, finished with 16 points including three straight in a pivotal 5-1 finish to dethrone last year’s titlists Lady Tamaraws.

“Sobrang saya ng feeling dahil last year ko na ito at team captain pa ako. Naging malaki ang responsibility ko sa team,” said the 24-year-old Santos.

Santos scored on an attack and was followed by a block off FEU’s Mecaila Morada in the fourth set. She scored again when her tap in front of the net was checked by FEU before going out of bounds for a 24-21 edge.

FEU’s Cherry May Vivas looked to extend the game but her spike sailed wide, giving the Lady Archers the crown.

Jacqueline Alarca contributed a team-high 19 points as Stephanie Mercado chipped in 17 for the Lady Archers. Charleen Cruz had 13 points.

Morada pumped in 18 points as Vivas added 14 points for the Lady Tamaraws, who were foiled to win their 30th title in the league.

Gonzales had 13 points while Rachel Daquis chipped in 11 for the Lady Tamaraws.

The Lady Tamaraws built a 14-7 lead on six straight markers by Daquis and setter April Jose leading to a second set win.

But the Lady Archers bounced back as Mercado scored three straight points on a 5-0 run to take a 20-14 advantage in the third set.

La Salle took a 12-8 advantage in the fourth set but FEU went on to tie the game at 20 on a La Salle net violation before Santos saved the game for the Lady Archers.

UAAP Women’s Volleyball Finals: Lady Spikers force Game 3

From gmanews.tv

The women’s volleyball champion for University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) season 71 will be known on Sunday after La Salle forced a deciding Game Three.

Jacqueline Alarca and Stephanie Mercado scored 16 and 15 points each as the Lady Archers beat the defending champions Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws, 17-25, 25-21, 25-18, 25-18, Wednesday at The Arena in San Juan.

Game Three of the finals will be played Sunday at 2:00 p.m. also at The Arena.

“Naging less pressured sila. Naka-gain sila ng experience noong Game One kasi most of my players, first time naglaro sa finals. Alam na nila kung paano maglaro sa finals (The players are less pressured. They already gained the experience during Game One since most of my players are first time playing in the finals. Now they know how to play in the finals),” said La Salle coach Ramil De Jesus.

The Lady Archers, who lost a five-setter to the Lady Tams in the opener, worked their way to victory on defense outscoring the Lady Tamaraws, 16-6, on blocks.

La Salle also neutralized Shaira Gonzales, who only had five points in the match.

Rachel Anne Daquis scored 22 points while Mecaila Morada added 19 for the Lady Tamaraws but sputtered after winning the first set.

Cherry May Vivas also contributed 11 points for the Lady Tamaraws.

The Lady Tamaraws had a 14-13 edge but a 4-0 run gave the Lady Archers the advantage to take the third set.

La Salle built a large lead after a 15-3 blast in the fourth including a pair of 6-0 and 7-1 runs in that stretch to enjoy a 20-8 spread.

FEU managed to chip away the deficit with six straight points but La Salle’s advantage was too much to overcome.

UAAP Volleyball Finals: Lady Spikers Lose Game 1

From gmanews.tv

Defending champion Far Eastern University (FEU) beat La Salle, 16-25, 27-25, 25-21, 24-26, 15-10, Sunday to gain headway in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) women’s volleyball best-of-three finals series at the packed The Arena in San Juan.

Mecaila Morada topscored with 22 points while Rachel Daquis connected on 18 hits as the Lady Tamaraws stepped closer in successfully defending the crown they won last year.

The Tamaraws go for the title via sweep on Wednesday, 4:00 p.m. at The Arena in San Juan.

“Siguro naging advantage talaga namin ‘yung experience. Natalo kami noong first set pero nakabawi kami. Hindi kami puwede ‘yung na-rarattle. Lumaban sila at ginagamit nila ‘yung isip sa paglalaro (I think experience is our advantage. We lost the first set but we bounced back. We must not be rattled with our game. My players fought hard and stuck with our game plan),” said FEU coach Nes Pamilar.

Shaira Gonzalez had 17 points for FEU but twisted her right ankle in the fourth set and did not return to action as La Salle came back to force a rubber.

But FEU never faltered in the fifth as setter April Jose scored before La Salle committed two errors giving the Lady Tamaraws a 10-6 advantage. Morada’s attack at match point sealed the game for the Lady Tamaraws.

Jacqueline Alarca had a team-high 20 points while Stephanie Mercado chipped in 16 points for the Lady Archers, who only had one loss prior to Game One.

FEU was at match point in the fourth on a La Salle reception error, 24-23, but Gonzales crossed the net as she sustained that injury. The Lady Archers stayed alive when Alarca scored to force a deciding fifth set.

In the second set, the Lady Tamaraws broke a 22-all deadlock on attacks by Daquis and Morada. The Lady Archers forced a tiebreak but a service error from La Salle’s Charleen Cruz and a kill by Morada gave the Lady Tamaraws a 27-25 win to tie the game at 1-set apiece.

A 6-2 run led to a 21-17 FEU edge en route to the third set victory. – GMANews.TV

UAAP Football: UST forces rubber for women’s crown

from www.gmanews.tv
University of Santo Tomas stunned No. 1 La Salle in extra time with a 2-0 win Thursday to force a knockout match in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) women’s football finals at the Ateneo field.

Mary Cres Ignacio scored the game’s first goal in the 97th minute before Aprilyn Reyes followed with another in the 98th minute for the Tigresses, who stayed alive as the Lady Archers hold a twice-to-beat edge in the finals.

“Medyo naubusan kami ng hangin pero mabuti nalang at nakabawi nung extra time (We kind of lost steam but good thing we were able to bounce back in extra time),” said UST coach Rozano Estrabon.

The Tigresses and Lady Archers return to action on Tuesday at the Ateneo field to determine the women’s football champion.

Ignacio knocked in the goal when La Salle goalkeeper Hanna Ibarra failed to cleanly block the ball.

Reyes tapped in a shot by Marianne Narciso and the Tigresses have a comfortable 2-0 lead with time running out.

La Salle had a scoring chance with only a minute left in regulation when Samantha Nierras broke free but her shot went straight to UST goalie Irish Jane Rapal.

After two seasons, La Salle is back from where they belong this decade, the finals.

The Lady Archers unleashed their offensive might in the fourth set to oust Adamson, 25-16, 23-25, 25-22, 25-23, and clinch the first championship slot in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament at the The Arena, San Juan.

Stephanie Mercado uncorked 17 hits while Jacq Alarca and Michelle Datuin added 15 and 13 markers respectively to help La Salle in making a return trip to the finals.

The Lady Archers’ last appearance to the finals was in the 2005-06 season when they completed a ‘three-peat’ in a star-studded line-up bannered by Maureen Penetrante, Desiree Hernandez and Chie Saet.

In the best-of-three finals, La Salle will face the winner of the much-anticipated “Final Four” match-up today between defending champion Far Eastern University and third-ranked University of Santo Tomas.

The duel between the Lady Tamaraws and Tigresses, two of the winningest women’s volleyball squads in the league, is set at 4 p.m.

“Hindi ko nagustuhan ang laro ng mga bata, kailangang may ma-improve sa laro ng mga bata pagdating sa finals, whether FEU o UST ang kalaban namin, dapat paghandaan namin nang husto,” said Lady Archers mentor Ramil de Jesus.

Angela Benting scored 18 kills while Jill Gustilo added 16 markers for the Lady Falcons.

After La Salle took the third frame via an outside hit by Adamson rookie Pau Soriano which served as the set point, the Taft-based spikers could not stop in connecting their attacks at the net.

The Lady Archers raced to a 10-1 advantage before the Lady Falcons moved closer to 7-10 courtesy of a Kaye Martinez error.

But this was the best that Adamson could reach, as Michelle Datuin starred in another La Salle onslaught to erect a 19-9 spread and never looked back.

In the Men’s division, La Salle faces UP today in their Final Four matchup for the right to meet UST in the Finals.  The Green Spikers enjoy a twice to beat advantage in this series.

La Salle wins UAAP Men’s Tennis Title

By Jonas Terrado (www.mb.com.ph)

La Salle completed its mastery over University of Santo Tomas by scoring a 4-1 win to capture the 71st UAAP men’s tennis title Friday at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.

Led by co-Most Valuable Players PJ Tierro and Irwin de Guzman, the Green Archers overpowered their rivals to sweep their best-of-three title series.

It was La Salle’s first championship since 2006. This time, however, the championship was much sweeter.

The Tigers were just a win away from winning the title via an eight-game sweep. But Tierro, a Davis Cup veteran, and company beat them in the final day of the elims to force a best-of-three championship.

It was a huge disappointment for the España-based netters as they blew away the opportunity of scoring a three-peat. That also denied them of scoring a rare double sweep of the tournament after its women counterparts bagged the title last week.

Tierro, the country’s top-ranked netter, combined with Jandrick de Castro in edging out Gerald Pinili and Roman Floreza, 6-0, 6-1, in the second doubles match while de Guzman trounced Michael Narvaez, 6-0, 6-3, in the first singles match.

Also winning for the Archers were John Will Baldonado who beat Raymund Villarete, 6-4, 5-7, 2-0 (ret) while Michael Basco won over Keane Barraquias, 6-1, 7-5, in the third singles affair.

Wilbur Orillano and Alexander Diego prevented an embarrassing shutout loss for UST as they beat David Alexander de Koenigswarter and Isaac Sabas, 6-4, 6-3, in the first doubles match.

Meanwhile, Ateneo’s Julius Lagman was named Rookie of the Year while Nikki Manalo of UST won the women’s MVP for the second straight season. La Salle’s Trudy Amoranto bagged the rookie of the year plum in the women’s side.
