The View From the Armchair – Game 9 vs UE

After watching last weekend’s game against UE which we lost, 69-74, the letters D-I-S popped into my mind. Why, you might ask. No, I wasn’t about to diss the team. But because some of the words that begin with DIS could best describe my reaction to the game.

So what words begin with dis?

Disappointing. We dropped a game which we should, by all rights should have won. UE is in rebuilding mode this year after losing the prolific Paul Lee and sharpshooter James Martinez. They had previously won only 1 game, and we beat them handily in the first round.

Dismaying. The inability of the team to mount any effective counterattack after UE had seized the initiative. The boys looked lost, unable to regain their composure after the Warriors went to a 1-2-2 press, which succeeded in discombobulating the brain trust behind the team. We can dish out the press, but can we take it? Apparently not, at least against UE. For sure, the other coaches will have taken note of what and how the Warriors turned the tables on our pressure defense.

Disenchanted. After 8 games, it was expected by most supporters that the Archers would have already developed a rhythm to their game, and a familiarity with each other that would help promote smooth, cohesive Archer ball that we’ve come to expect at this time of the season. No such luck. Or was it really just luck?

Disconnected. At least, that’s what it appeared to be at times, with the Archers coughing up the ball 24 times through errant passes, traveling errors, and fumbles. All of which gifted UE with 17 turnover points while we only had 18. Again, repeating the trend of the last few games, the Archers committed more miscues than the opponents, negating our one of our historical competitive advantages.

Disappeared. The Archers’ confidence, that is. No, our players were on the court for the full 40 minutes. A couple of Archers did go down, Yutien due to a knee injury, and Luigi who was accidentally kneed on the thigh by a fellow Archer.

Disastrous. The loss of composure after the first quarter that allowed UE to grab the lead and keep our team at bay that made the disbelieving diehards wonder if this just a dream.

Distressed. After waiting a year for the team to gain a bit more maturity, the performance against UE looked like a return to the ways of 2 years ago.

Oh no they didn’t! Archers lose to UE

It happens every now and then- the higher ranked and more favoured team beaten by the league-trailing team.

It happened to the FEU Tamaraws this season, after their shocking loss to the UP Fighting Maroons.

Unfortunately this time around, it happened to the DLSU Green Archers, as they were stunned by cellar dweller University of the East Red Warriors, 74-69, in the continuation of the UAAP Season 75 Men’s Basketball Tournament at the Araneta Coliseum.

Paul Zamar and John Noble combined for 35 of the 74-point output of the Red Warriors to help notch for their team its 2nd win in 8 games, and consequently hand the Green Archers its fifth loss this season. With the win, UE now ties UP for the last spot, while DLSU will join UST, who likewise lost to league leader ADMU, in the 4th to 5th slots.

Both teams performed almost evenly in the first quarter. But UE, behind the hot shooting of Noble and Zamar, capitalized on the errors, and poor free throw shooting of DLSU in the second to edge out the latter at halftime, 39-35.

After the half time break, both teams played sloppy basketball, committing turnovers after another. But the Recto-based squad unleashed a 9-0 run at the opening of the final canto, which saw UE’s lead balloon to 11.

The Archers’ attempt to turn the game around went to naught, as they failed to find their offensive groove and struggled in defending against the Red Warriors.

THE SCORES:
UE 74 – Zamar 19, Noble 16, Sumang 7, Santos 7, Duran 7, Casajeros 6, Javier 4, Enguio 4, Tagarda 4, Sumido 0, Flores 0.

DLSU 69 – Torres 12, Webb 11, Revilla 9, Vosotros 9, Marata 5, Atkins 5, Van Opstal 4, Dela Paz 4, Tampus 2, Paredes 2, Villanueva 2, Mendoza 2, Andrada 2
Quarter Scoring: 17-19, 39-35, 56-52, 74-69

Pregame: DLSU vs UE 8/20

The Green Archers look to maintain their position in the top half of the standings as they face the UE Red Warriors tomorrow. Game time is at 1PM.

After another tragic loss to the Adamson Falcons last week, expect the team to “let it all out” against the last-place Warriors, whom they defeated 87-63 in the first round. There is no better cure for the Archers than to win this game convincingly in order to erase the frustration and get them back on track.

We hope to see a free-flowing, up-tempo game by the Archers tomorrow. A lot of online supporters have suggested that the team should sometimes allow their natural basketball instincts to take over rather than rely heavily on set plays. While it is still important to play within a system, players should also be given the liberty to make their own shots. Besides, this style of play has enabled the team to erect huge leads in previous games and last Sunday, come back from a 22-point deficit.

No doubt, our team has the talent and at times they should take it upon themselves to score especially if a play was not executed right. If the opportunity to make a basket is there, don’t hesitate and take it. It also helps build the players confidence. A combination of a deliberate and free-flowing offense can work well for the Archers.

The team cannot afford to lose any more games if they still want to aspire for at least the number 2 position after the eliminations.  We hope that the Archers are all fired up and will pour out their frustrations on the rebuilding Warriors.

The View from the Armchair – Game 5 vs UE

The Green Archers came off an erratic game game against NU with an emphatic rout of rebuilding UE, taking a quarter to get the measure of the Red Warriors before turning it on in the second quarter behind the traditional pressing and trapping defense to pull away and coast to the win.

At the end, the margin was 24 points, 87-63. Some critics of the tam will probably ask: “was the lead big enough? Or should it have been double that?” After all, UE is a rebuilding team, which doesn’t seem to have the manpower to climb out of the cellar.

The Green Archers climbed into 4th place with the blowout win over UE, in the process going over 50% for the first time this season with the 3rd consecutive win. They took all of the first quarter to gain their bearings, allowing the Warriors to keep pace before turning on the heat in the second behind a suffocating full court press/trap and a sterling performance by Oda Tampus to blow the game wide open and take a 19-point lead at halftime. The Archers exploded for a 32-point quarter while limiting UE to another 13-point quarter.

Another rocky 3rd quarter start featuring 5 straight travelling errors rekindled concerns about another 3rd quarter meltdown, but the Archers regained their bearings to snuff out any UE hopes for a comeback. The last quarter saw Coach Dindo empty his bench and give Fonzo Gotladera, Papot Paredes, and Martin Reyes some minutes with the outcome of the game already decided. Read more…

Green Archers crush UE for third straight win

The Green Archers notched their 3rd straight victory after a 0-2 season start as they thrashed the UE Red Warriors 87-63 today.

How it happened

The Archers were not only expected to win this match, they were expected to win big. They however got off to a slow start trailing 3-9 in the early goings of the game. Both teams were tied at 13 after the opening period.

With its offense and defense now in high gear, La Salle finally took control of the game come the second period. The Archers built their lead off their swarming defense which led to several fast break points and easy inside baskets. The team erected a 19-point lead at the half.

Unlike their last two games, La Salle kept the intensity going in the second half and never gave UE the slightest opportunity to threaten their huge lead.

Oda Tampus led the team with 15 points followed by Simon Atkins and LA Revilla with 12 and 10 points respectively. All 16 Archers played today including sophomore Martin Reyes who was able to chip in 4 points in the closing seconds. Adrian Santos top scored for the Red Warriors with 14 points.

Stat of the Game

The Archers swatted 6 shots.

Next Game

After chalking up wins against the relatively weaker teams, the Archers will face a strong test next Saturday as they battle the Adamson Falcons.

Boxscores:

DLSU 87 – Tampus 15, Atkins 12, Revilla 10, Vosotros 7, Torres 6, Dela Paz 5, Villanueva 5, Mendoza 5, Marata 5, Van Opstal 4, Reyes 4, Webb 4, Andrada 3, Paredes 2

UE 63 – Santos 14, Zamar 10, Noble 10, Zosa 9, Javier 4, Chavez 4, Casajeros 4, Montelibano 2, Tagarda 2, Sumido 2, Duran 2

Quarters: 13-13, 45-26, 65-44, 87-63

Pregame: DLSU vs UE 7/31

La Salle looks to continue its winning run as they collide with cellar dweller UE tomorrow. Game time is at 1PM.

The Green Archers are reeling after two successive losses to start the season. This past week, they defeated UP 79-67 and NU 74-63. These wins though were not as nearly convincing as the final score might show. Both games almost followed the same storyline with La Salle waxing hot and erecting a huge halftime lead only to turn ice cold in the second half thus giving their opponent the opportunity to mount a serious comeback.

The win over NU last Thursday was overshadowed by the team’s field goal futility in the third quarter. Instead of being ecstatic, supporters are beginning to question the team’s mental toughness and their ability to close out games strong.

The still win-less Red Warriors are in a mess right now after being blown out by Adamson by 31 points in their previous outing. If only Lee and Acibar stayed, this team could have contended this season.

The Archers are expected to cruise to another lopsided victory here but if they really want to silence all the doubters, they need to play consistently all throughout with no letdown on offense and defense.

The team should not just win, they should win convincingly.

UAAP Season 74: Sizing Up the Opposition – Part 2

UE Warriors

The UE Warriors are officially in rebuilding mode after having lost 8 players from last year – Lee, Martinez, Acibar, Reyes, Resopa, Razon, Ayala, and Hernandez. It will be particularly difficult to replace Lee, Acibar and Martinez, who were among the best shooters in the Warrior lineup. UE failed to make the playoffs last year. The Warriors seem to have a smallish lineup, so expect them to play an uptempo game with lots of small-ball lineups.

What happened last year?

We easily clobbered UE in the first round, 82-63, dominating all the way to win comfortably. However, the Warriors turned the tables on the Archers, 74-80 as UE caught fire in the final quarter. The Archer defense took a break and allowed UE to make 7 out of their 8 4th quarter field goal attempts.

How do we measure up against them?

Without the prolific duo of  Lee and Martinez, the Warrior offense loses some of its punch, and the departure of the veterans Reyes and Acibar further weakens the Warrior lineup. UE’s lineup also doesn’t seem to have any pure centers, so we should win the battle of the boards.  On the bench, Coach Dindo faces his former Purefoods teammate Jerry Codinera, who is making his collegiate coaching debut.  We will most likely take both games against UE.

UE lineup:

Guard: CASAJEROS Lord, CHAVEZ Von, SUMANG Roi, SUMIDO Jay-ar, TAGARDA Lucas, ZAMAR Paul, ZOSA BJ
Guard/Forward: ENGUIO Biboy, SABANGAN Jessmar
Forward/Center: DE LEON RR, JAVIER Chris
Forward: DURAN Erwin, FLORES Jairold, MONTELIBANO Nico, NOBLE JM, SANTOS Adrian

Head coach: CODIÑERA, Jerry (1st season) Read more…

The View From the Armchair – Game 13 vs UE

Memo to Green Archers: don’t take any team for granted, particularly one playing to salvage some pride out of a lost season. And if you’re superstitious, exercise extra caution on the 13th game.

Playing with barely a day’s rest in between games, the Green Archers came out looking to win a shootout with UE, and fell, 74-80 in their penultimate game in the eliminations. The 5th loss dented the Archers’ chances of figuring in a race for a twice-to-beat advantage in the playoffs; however with Adamson’s loss to NU, the final placing will be determined in our game with the Falcons on Thursday.

The Archers got another quick start, allowed UE to grab the lead, 8-11, then poured it on to take a 10-point lead at 22-12 behind a hot start by Papot (8 points) and Spider (6 points) before settling into a 25-20 advantage at the end of the first quarter. The 25 points we scored was enabled by our accurate shooting from the 2point area, where we made 12 out of 19, but unfortunately we missed all our 5 3point attempts in the period. The relatively high score was an ominous sign of how the game would be played.

Our shooting dipped in the second quarter, where we made only 5 out of our 16 attempts. UE’s energy level, on the other hand, seemed to exceed ours as they matched us in rebounding for the quarter with 14 boards, and their tenacious defending forced us into 7 turnovers which they translated into 5 points in contrast to UE’s 4 turnovers. UE again pounced on our sluggish defense to score 20 points in the quarter, capitalizing on our foul trouble to sink 13 out of 15 ft attempts in the half. Fouls limited the playing time of Simon, and this possibly was a factor in his sub-par performance in the game. Read more…

Pregame: Green Archers vs Red Warriors Round 2

After a one-year absence, the Green Archers are back in familiar territory – the Final Four. Except for last year, the team has been in this post-elimination round phase since the format was adopted in 1994. Making it this far is already an achievement for this young team considering that they were not even expected to contend this season. Well now that they are in, they might us well take it up a notch and try to clinch a twice-to-beat advantage.

Don’t expect the also-ran UE Warriors to roll over and just give us the game without a fight. To be honest, they did quite well in the second round, scoring a couple of upset wins and nearly defeated the top team in the league. Unfortunately, it’s a case of too late the hero as the losses that piled up in the first round were just too much for them to bounce back in contention.

Here’s hoping that La Salle would continue to build on the momentum from their last two wins as we approach the homestretch of the eliminations. Finish strong guys!

The View From the Armchair – Game 3 vs UE

The Green Archers ran roughshod over last year’s runner-up UE Warriors, 82-63 to get back into the winning column. The game felt like a replay of their performance against UP, with La Salle scoring first to grab the lead they never relinquished, and pulling away in the second half to rout their stunned opponents. Like UP, UE was unofficially ranked above DLSU despite losing 3 of their top players of last year. Maui Villanueva returned from a sub-par game against NU with a superb game: 16 points (6/9 fgs, 4/5 fts!, 7 rebounds, 3 assists and 1 steal).

Another fast start was the key

One of the concerns about this “green” Archer team is their consistency. But this time, no one’s complaining, because they started off strong unlike their game against NU. Team Captain Atkins again figured prominently in the strong start, sinking a corner triple to kick off scoring. Again, in another parallel to their first game, Sam Marata also hit 3point shot in the first quarter, forcing UE to respect the outside shooting and opening up the paint for what was to follow later in the game.

One difference between this game and the previous ones – Ferdinand asserted himself in the first quarter, scoring 6 points and pulling down 3 boards to serve notice that the La Salle interior game would be a force to reckon with, at least for this game. The Archer press, which was considered as already thoroughly scouted, still pulled off some surprises, accounting for 5 turnovers in the opening 10 minutes.
