Lady Spikers crush Amazons to secure top spot in semis

Today, the Lady Spikers cemented their position as top seed, breezing through UE in straight sets, 25-10, 25-14 and 25-20. With 2 losses, UST can only finish 2nd.

Michelle Gumabao and Clarisse Yeung were fielded in the 2nd set, while Carmel Garbin, Camille Cerveza and Regine Diego had some playing time in the 3rd. The serve continued to be a double-edged weapon for our team, resulting in some easy points as it frustrated the UE receivers, but also gifted then with some freebies as the aggressive serving resulted in some serves either hitting the net or sailing long. Jacq served at least 2 aces and Gumabao 1. Team captain Steph Mercado had another sterling game as she scored repeatedly off spikes and blocks, and the rest of the team backed her up with good all around play while minimizing their unforced errors.

Lady Spikers overwhelm NU for 12th win

The Lady Spiker’s win today wasn’t a surprise at all. What is shocking though was that the winless NU squad was able to win a set. You could chalk that up to overconfidence on the part of our volleybelles. Nevertheless, with the Lady Spiker’s 25-15, 19-25, 25-15, 25-13 demolition job on the Lady Bulldogs, they are assured of a twice-to-beat advantage in the semis. A win over also-ran UE on Wednesday will solidify their top position at the end of the eliminations.

Charleen Cruz led the team with 14 points and 11 attacks.

Green Spikers edge out Maroons to claim third spot

Thanks to the heads-up play of stalwarts Chris Macasaet and John Kevin Dela Vega, the Green Spikers grab the third position in the men’s volleyball standings as they trounced the UP Maroons 25-23, 25-19, 25-23 today. Both Macasaet and Dela Vega had 14 points apiece for the Green Spikers, who improved their record to 7-5.

After struggling in the early part of the tournament, our men’s volleyball team has climbed their way into contention. With only 2 games remaining in their elimination round schedule, they have to win both in order for them to solidify their position in the final four.

Stephanie Mercado – Carving her own name

Manila, Philippines – In the 1980’s, Lydia de Vega brought pride and honor to the country when she won gold medals in the track and field events of the New Delhi and Seoul Asian Games. These feats earned her the title as Asia’s Sprint Queen. Two decades later, Lydia’s daughter, Stephanie Mecardo, has steadily inched her way closer to becoming volleyball royalty.

Gifted with athletic genes, Stephanie started to play tennis, badminton, and swimming at a very young age. She, however candidly admitted that, unlike her mom, she never wanted to get into athletics.

Stephanie was already in high school when she realized her love for volleyball.

“Nu’ng una, laru-laro lang sa labas ng bahay with friends, until I got in the varsity team of St. Bridget’s School in Quezon City,” said Stephanie of her volleyball initiation.

Years later, she would become a member of the Philippine Youth Team. While donning the national colors, Stephanie got the attention of De La Salle University Lady Spikers coach Ramil de Jesus, who immediately talked to Lydia and Stephanie to convince her to play for La Salle in college.

“I was recruited by other teams, but I chose La Salle because I liked the school,” Stephanie said.

With the likes of Desiree Hernandez, Carissa Gotis, Maureen Penetrante, Carla Llaguno, Chi Saet and Manilla Santos already comprising La Salle’s starting lineup, Stephanie was relegated as a bench player on her first year. But a talent like Stephanie’s would never go unnoticed.

As some of the starters graduated, Stephanie got her own playing time and eventually became one of the team’s more dependable hitters. On her third playing year, she joined Santos, Jacqueline Alarca, Michelle Datuin, Charleen Cruz, Kaye Martinez, Celine Hernandez and Melissa Gohing in towing La Salle to its fourth UAAP title this decade as they ruled the Season 71 Women’s Volleyball finals.

Bigger shoes to fill

This season, Stephanie steps on bigger shoes. Aside from being La Salle’s team captain, she is also the squad’s top offensive option. In the first round, she amassed 99 points—good enough to make her the league’s sixth best scorer.

“Stephanie is a good leader,” de Jesus said. “She is one of the team’s go-to girls.”

Her superb performance is reflective of the team’s unblemished record so far. Down by a set against the University of the Philippines Lady Maroons last January 30, Stephanie came through with 23 points to pace her teammates and win the game.

A fourth year Interdisciplinary Business Studies student, Stephanie, admits that her responsibilities as a student-athlete are far more challenging than people think it is.

“Balancing volleyball and studies is difficult, especially when the professors do not understand our schedule,” Stephanie said. “It takes a lot of sacrifice to do both.”

Nevertheless, she says that she still has a social life and likes spending time with her teammates. She is particularly closest to her batch mates Alarca, Cruz, Martinez, and Regine Diego. She reveals that her team’s close knit is the secret why they are performing well.

“We have better teamwork and more determination,” Stephanie said.

No longer under her mom’s shadow

With one more playing year left after this season, Stephanie is set to wreck more havoc in the league, or in any volleyball meet, as she is quite hesitant to accept a stint in the Philippine Team.

“Volleyball is only for college,” Stephanie said. “Once I graduate, I will start working and take my Master’s degree. But if I get a good offer to play for the National Team, I might consider it.”

Given her and her team’s achievements, it is easy to conclude that more people are taking notice of Stephanie. She is no longer just Lydia de Vega’s daughter. She has become her own person.

“I am very happy because I have made a name for myself,” Stephanie said.

Jacq Attack! Lady Spikers beat UP

Living up to their team name, the UP Fighting Lady Maroons put up a resilient fight to start the ballgame which enabled them to snatch the first set from the unusually sluggish Lady Spikers. But when the defending champions turned it on in the succeeding sets, the girls from Diliman realized that scoring a colossal upset is just wishful thinking.

Perhaps the only thing colossal today was Jacqueline Alarca’s game as she was instrumental to the team’s win with 22 pts and 17 attacks. With the Lady Spikers 23-25, 25-17, 25-11, 25-18 win today, they still remain unbeaten with an 11-0 slate. They are expected to breeze past their two next assignments against the lower-seeded teams in the coming weeks.

The only team standing in their way for an elimination sweep is UST who is currently in second place. The two powerhouses collide on Feb 14.

Ah yes, pure intensity written all over Abigail Maraño’s face in this defensive sequence with Kaye Martinez. Abigail currently is among the top ten in blocks this season and it is not a surprise that  she is already part of the regular rotation in just her rookie year.

The winning comment/imaginary conversation will win an 8×10 hard copy photo of our Women’s Volleyball team.

By the way, Abigail and Kaye  seem to have both their hands on the ball. Who gets the stat?

Diez is it! Lady Spikers get win number 10

The Lady Spikers nailed its tenth win in as many games as they trounced FEU 25-16, 25-23, 25-14 today. Except perhaps for the 2nd set in which they committed 17 unforced errors, the Lady Spikers hardly felt any resistance from the Lady Tams all throughout the match. The second stringers got the job done in finishing them off in the 3rd set.

Stephanie Mercado was adjudged best player of the game with 13 points.

Sadly, this year’s Lady Tams are now just a shadow of their once formidable squads in seasons past.

Shot down the birds and chained the dogs

For the second time this season, the Lady Spikers reminded the up-and-coming Lady Eagles that they still have their work cut out for them before they can contend for the title. Behind Jacqueline Alarca’s superb performance, the defending champions defeated Ateneo today in four sets 25-15, 25-20, 21-25, 25-21 to remain unbeaten in the tournament with a 9-0 slate.

Earlier this morning, the Green Spikers pulled off a five-set win over the NU Bulldogs 25-19, 30-28, 21-25, 27-29, 15-8. Chris Macasaet paced the team with 29 points. The Green Spikers are currently at solo 4th with a 5-5 card.
